Tour Overview
Bhutan is a tiny country that is nestled amongst the highest mountains of the world. This is a land of the dragon with scenic views of the Himalayan snowcapped peaks, Buddhist monasteries, Dzongs with ancient Buddhist cultures and traditions and villages with rice terraces and ample of Cheese and chilies. The kingdom of Bhutan remains one of the last unspoiled gems of the Himalayas. Closed to foreign visitors until the 1970s, Bhutan's past and present are firmly grounded in traditional Buddhist culture.
This is an 8-day trek with the highest camp being at an altitude of 13,448ft. We get fantastic views of Mt. Jomolhari’s twin peaks, Jichu Drake and Tsheringang. This trek begins and ends at Drukgyel Dzong.
The region is isolated but incredibly beautiful and you traverse a large glacial valley with several moraines and climb over a windy pass of Bhonte la (16,040 ft).
Itinerary
Fly into Paro. If you are flying in from Delhi or Kathmandu the flight over the Himalayas is one of the most spectacular experiences one will ever experience. You will fly past Mt. Everest, Kanchenjunga and the entire Himalayan range visible on the left side. On landing at Paro, you will be met by our representative. After Customs and Immigrations formalities, you will be escorted to the hotel. Overnight Hotel. (B,L,D)
Drive the winding road northwest up the Pa-Chu to Drukgyel Dzong, the ruined Fortress which once defended this valley from Tibetan invasion. This Dzong was built in the 17th century by Shabdrung Nawang Namgyel, the spiritual leader of Bhutan. It is believed that through the miraculous power of Shabdrung that the Bhutanese were able to defeat the Tibetans seven times. The name Drukgyel Dzong means ‘victorious fortress’. On a clear day one can view Mt. Jumolhari the sacred Mountain. On the way back visit one of the Typical Bhutanese farm houses. Lunch at the Hotel. After lunch drive to Ta-Dzong which was once the watch tower for Paro valley, now it houses the National Museum and then walk downhill pass the Paro Dzong and crossing the typical traditional roofed bridge to Paro town. Starting at Drukgyel (8,462 ft) and camp near Sharna Zampa (9,400 ft). Gradual climb following the Paro River through the agriculture valley and villages. The campsite is opposite to the Gunitsawa Army check post in a meadow. Overnight Camp. (B,L,D)
Starting at Sharna Zampa and camp at Thangthangka (11,900 ft). The trial is a gradual ascent with plenty of ups and downs through conifer forest, ferns and Rhododendrons. A magnificent view of Mt. Jumolhari can be seen from your camp site on clear days. Overnight Camp. (B,L,D)
Starting at Thangthangka and camp at Jangothang (13,448 ft). Today the trial passes an army post and the village of Soe and a small settlement at Takethang. Yak herders live here. Camp beneath a ruined fortress at the base of Mt. Jumolhari. Overnight Camp. (B,L,D)
Acclimatisation Day. You can spend the day relaxing or there are several day hikes to choose from. An interesting hike would be to get views of Mt.Jumolhari and Jichu Drake. Overnight Camp. (B,L,D)
Starting at Jangothang and camp at Dhumzo (12,400 ft). Today you go past the Tshophu lakes before you ascend your major pass on this trek, the Bhonte la (16,040 ft). There are beautiful views of Jumolhari from the lakes. Overnight Camp. (B,L,D)
Today you encounter a smaller pass, Thombu la (14,800 ft). Overnight Camp. (B,L,D)
Starting at Thombu Shong and ending at Sharna Zampa. First half of the day offers beautiful views and mostly descent in the second half till the military camp at Gunitsawa. The camp 20 minutes upstream. Overnight Camp. (B,L,D)
End of Trek: Sharna Zampa - Drukgyel Dzong. Today we will retrace our footsteps back to Drukgyel Dzong and then take the 1 hr jeep ride back to Thimpu. Overnight hotel. (B,L,D)
Start your day with a hike (about an hour) to the historic Cheri Monastery; built by Shabdrung Ngawang Namgyel in 1620, this is where the first community of monks in Bhutan was established. Upon return from your hike, visit many of Thimphu’s cultural sites. The Royal Textile Academy - weaving is an integral component of the culture and tradition of Bhutan. With the aim to preserve and promote this living art, the Royal Textile Academy of Bhutan was instituted in May 2005. The Buddha Dordenma Statue, this massive statue of Shakyamuni measures in at a height of 51.5 meters, making it one of the largest statues of Buddha in the world. Visit the Centenary Farmers Market; located below the main town, near the Wangchhu River, Thimphu’s weekend market is by far the largest domestic market for the farmers in Bhutan. Overnight Hotel. Depart for Paro airport to catch your onward flight back home.
