Tour Overview

Mera Peak is the highest trekking peak in Nepal. It is situated on the edge of the famous Khumbu Region, which is dominated by Mount Everest. Mera Peak is a straight forward climb and is frequently ascended by groups and an individual whose only climbing qualifications are that they are in good physical shape.

The trek takes us south from the airstrip at Lukla, trekking through beautiful forested hillsides and over several passes before climbing up to the Mera La. This is a rewarding experience as it provides fantastic panoramic view of six 8,000 mtrs peaks like Mr. Kangchenjunga and Makalu to the east and Everest appearing over the massive southern aspect of Nuptse and Lhotse to the north. To the west stands the spires of Ama Dablam and Kangtega and in the distance is the mighty Mt. Cho Oyu. The climb itself takes the north face glacier in a steady rise to the summit ridge.

Itinerary

Arrival at the Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) in Kathmandu. You will be greeted by our representative who will take you to your hotel. Overnight Hotel.

Half-day sightseeing in Kathmandu. Overnight Hotel (B)

We take an early flight to Lukla. Once we land in Lukla, we regroup and prepare for the trek and head towards east under the Kalo Khola ridge. The first few hours of the trek are easy and follows straight trail passing through small villages and pastures and through dense rhododendron forests. The final stretch is an ascent of uphill trek to Chuthanga Overnight Lodge. (B,L,D)

After breakfast, we start the challenging day with the uphill ascend for the first few to reach Chherterla pass at 15,080 ft. and enter towards into Hinku valley. This pass also marks the border of Sagarmatha and Makalu Barun National parks. From the pass, view of the Hinku Kongde Ri, Numbur Himal, Lumding Himal, can be seen. From the pass, we follow the straight trail and then descend down to Thulikharka.. Overnight Lodge. (B,L,D)

From Thuli Kharka, we walk through big boulders and traverse uphill and downhill. The first view of Mera peak can be seen from the viewpoint below Tashi Dingma village. From here, the trail again follows steep decent to Tashing Ongma and after crossing two suspension bridges over Hinku river, we climb the final uphill trek to Kothe. Overnight Lodge. (B,L,D)

After having breakfast, we follow the uphill trail along the Hinku river and arrive at the summer herder’s settlement at Gondishung. Further, we come across Lungsumba Gompa which is believed to have been built 200 years ago and after a further ascend we arrive at Thaknak village. Overnight Lodge. (B,L,D)

Leaving Thaknak, we follow the lateral moraine of Dig Glacier to Dig Kharka, which offers spectacular views of Charpate Himal. The trail climbs through moraines to the snout of the Hinku Nup and Shar Glaciers, and then climbs more steeply to Khare. If we can reach Khare on time for lunch, we can engage in hikes in the surroundings of Khare. Overnight Lodge. (B,L,D)

Today is another acclimatization and training day. In the morning we will get our gears sorted out and set up a climbing scenario and practice using crampons, jumars, abseiling to familiarize with the climbing equipment for the next day’s climb. Overnight Lodge. (B,L,D)

We will start our climb up to the Mera la. At first it is easy but the trek up to the glacier is steep in sections. There is a chance of rock fall so wearing helmets, crampons are needed. After we follow the easy graded snow slopes, and after a short distance arrive at an area of crevasses which we will have to navigate carefully. We then make are way slowly up to High camp. This camp is hidden behind a rocky section and is small and has some drop offs on the right as you enter the camp. It is time to re hydrate and recover for summit push. Views of Mt. Everest, Makalu, Cho-Oyu, south face of Lhotse, Nuptse, Chamlang and Baruntse. Overnight Tent. (B,L,D)

The climb to the summit of Mera Peak starts gradually, and much depends on weather conditions. Once we leave high camp usually at 2am it should take 5 - 6 hours to reach the summit The central summit appears above the wide glacier, flanked by 2 ridges. We climb the snowfields avoiding the crevasses. This steep section can take 2 hours and is slow going. The route swings to the east of the lefthand ridge before turning back towards the main summit ridge of Mera. Mera peak has 3 summits, our objective is the highest. This short steep snow slope is easily climbed, but the last 98 ft. requires a lot of effort, sometimes jumaring on a short steep ice section and you arrive on the summit. After reaching the summit and enjoying amazing views over the Himalayas, we have a short abseil before the long descent back to High camp and back down to Khare. Overnight Lodge. (B,L,D)
