Tour Overview

The ancient kingdom of Mustang also known as the forbidden kingdom is in a spectacular location on a high plateau in central Asia, hidden behind an almost impassable wall of the world's highest mountains. The dominant geological feature is the Kali Gandaki gorge. This is the deepest gorge in the world, and is part of an ancient trade route stretching from Lhasa, across the Tibetan plateau and then down the gorge via Nepal to India. The isolation of Lo-Manthang was at times helpful in maintaining a degree of independence during periods of conflict between warlords.

Upper Mustang Trek is a relatively new trek in Nepal as the region was opened to foreigners since 1992. The area developed a unique culture and tradition as it remained in seclusion for all these years. You will find a well-preserved Tibetan culture and get to witness the Bon religion, which predates Tibetan Buddhism. You will be visiting different Gompas and Chortens and walking on a bridge festooned with prayer flags.

There are close cultural ties between Tibet and Lo-Manthang. Due to its proximity to Tibet and the arid mountainous terrain that surrounds and protects upper mustang-culture, religions and language have remained entirely Tibetan Its people, known as the Loba, speak a dialect of Tibetan, and geographically Lo-Manthang is a western extension of the same plateau, with the same problems of inaccessibility.  With the onset of winter most people here bundle up and descend to the Himalayan foothills, and return only after the temperatures go up again. Most of the people engage in farming during summer, though there is little vegetation as the region itself is high mountains desert.

Itinerary

Upon your arrival in the Tribhuwan International Airport (TIA) in Kathmandu, you will be greeted by one of our representatives. You will be escorted to the hotel. Overnight Hotel.

Half day sightseeing around the city. Overnight Hotel (B)

We will take the morning scenic flight to Pokhara (2,700 ft), passing over the deep valley and rivers of central Nepal and taking views of the Ganesh, Dhaulagiri and Annapurna Himals. After checking into the hotel, you are free to visit the lake side. Overnight Hotel (B)

This morning, weather permitting, we will board an early morning flight from Pokhara up the Kali Gandaki Gorge, flying between the majestic peaks of Dhaulagiri (26,804 ft.) and Annapurna (26,538 ft.) to land at the small airstrip in Jomsom (8,922 ft.)  in full view of Nilgiri (23,160 ft.) to the south. After disembarking, we will collect our gear and prepare for our jeep ride to Chhuksang (9,774 ft.) via the medieval-looking village of Kagbeni (9,184 ft.) which is also the northernmost area that foreigners can visit without a permit. We will be driving along the rocky trails of the Kali Gandaki River, named after one of the Hindu goddesses (“Kali”) and said to be one of the holiest rivers in Nepal. At the end of Kagbeni village, we will go through administrative formalities at the check post and enter the forbidden kingdom of Mustang.

We will then drive through the village of Tangbe (10,037 ft.), where we will take in our first views of the uniquely colored chortens and landscapes of the Upper Mustang. We will continue driving to Chhuksang at the confluence of the Kali Gandaki and Narshing Khola rivers. From here we will get off the jeep and start our hike. We will cross the Kali Gandaki before a short steep climb brings us to the village of Chele (10,168 ft.), from where we will have a magnificent view of the southern valley of the Kali Gandaki. We then continue west from Chele. The climb from here is steep, leading us to a cairn from where we will see the village of Ghyakar (11,683 ft) and its fields across a massive canyon. After crossing a ridge, the trail enters a large side valley, gradually descending to Samar. Overnight Camp / Lodge. (B,L,D)

After breakfast, we take an alternative route to the main trail in order to visit an ancient cave that houses the Rhangchung Chorten (meaning "the chorten that built itself or appeared by a miracle"), hidden away in a deep canyon. We take a sharp descent to cross a ravine, then we deviate off the main trail, cross an even deeper ravine then start up the long hike up to a pass from where we will have a great view of the canyon to our north and east and of the snowcapped mountains to the south. After the pass a narrow traverse flanked by juniper bushes brings us to another lower pass from where we get the distant view of Syangmochen (12,464 ft.). After a very steep descent, we finally reach the cave monastery, which seems to be growing out of the vertical wall. The cave, decorated with khatas (ceremonial scarves), numerous chortens and other ritual items is believed to have been visited by Padmasambhava, the Indian saint who brought Buddhism to Tibet. After visiting the cave, we head north to Syangmochen. After a gradual and long climb we arrive at Syangmochen where we stop for lunch.

After lunch we will head to Jhaite. Overnight Camp/ Lodge. (B,L,D)

Today we will walk through barley field of Tama Gaun village, we will then begin an unrelenting climb for about 1.5 hours that takes us across the head of the valley to the Nyi La pass (13,186 ft.), the southern boundary of Mustang proper. After a gentle descent for about 1.5 hour, we reach the Village of Ghami (11,513 ft.), where we will have lunch. After lunch we cross a suspension bridge and then pass one of the most impressive and the longest Mani Walls in Nepal. We will then climb for another 1 hour to the high pass (12,694 ft.), and then descent for another 1 hour to the ancient town of Charang. The entry portal is picturesque, with a nearby five story Dzong (fortress monastery), formerly the home of the Kings of Mustang. Overnight lodge. (B,L,D)

From here the walk is downhill for about 30 mins to reach Lo-Mangthang. Overnight Lodge. (B,L,D)
