Tour Overview

This new trek route falls entirely within Sikkim and is perhaps one of the finest ridge walks in the world with views being spectacular all along. We begin in the small town of Uttarey and continue on to the continuation of the Singalila ridge. Opened recently, this trail is not much frequented by trekkers as most are unaware of this trail. There are sections of narrow paths, ups and downs but for the most part, the trek follows a good path used mainly by yak herders in Sikkim.

On this wilderness trail, the ridge at Chiwabhanjang is actually the border between Nepal, Sikkim and West Bengal. Dotted with beautiful high-altitude lakes and passing several passes, this trek gives the opportunity of viewing Mt. Everest, Makalu, and the whole Himalayan ridge from Nepal to Sikkim. We also see Kanchenjunga not only once at a specific high point but several times over the days as you cross the passes. This trail finally joins with the main west Sikkim trekking trail at Dzongri where the option is to continue to Goecha la - the final view point where the left shoulder of Kanchenjunga stands just 9miles away as the crow flies. The advantage of this trek is that it is a round trip. Still a new trek, the Sikkim Ridge trek promises to be among the best with its crowning glory of Kanchenjunga seen from several vantage points along this trek which still remains pristine and un spoilt.

Itinerary

Arrive at the domestic airport and catch the connecting flight to Bagdogra. Upon arrival at Bagdogra airport, you will be received by our representatives. The drive from Bagdogra to Darjeeling is a beautiful 3 hours ride along forests, tea estates, and pleasant hillside towns and villages. Our drive into Darjeeling will also take us along the route of the famous Toy Train. Overnight hotel. (D)

We will visit the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute (HMI), the center and training school for Indian climbers. The Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park is on the premises of the HMI has a rare collection of animals, some of which include the Siberian Tigers, Red Pandas and the Snow Leopards. We will also visit the Tibetan Refugee Self Help Center and the Happy Valley Tea Garden and take a tour of the tea factory. Late afternoon tea at the Tenzing Norgay family Residence.  We will have the unique opportunity to visit the late Tenzing's personal museum, which houses an invaluable collection of medals and personal memorabilia. Overnight hotel. (B,L,D)

Drive to Singla and cross the Rangit river into Sikkim. Pemayangtse, the old capital of Sikkim, is home to one of the most beautiful and sacred Buddhist Monastery in Sikkim. From Pemayangtse, the drive to Pelling is about 10 minutes. We will witness a magnificent panoramic view of the Kanchenjunga range pass. Overnight hotel. (B,L,D)

After breakfast, we take a scenic 3-hour drive by jeep through the tea plantations to Uttarey (6,441 ft). The road follows the river Rangeet, passing through a beautiful steep sided valley en route. Here we need to show our trek permits. From here it is a pleasant walk-through thick rhododendron forest as we climb gradually to a lovely meadow at Chitre. Overnight Tent. (B,L,D)

From here it is a short 1½ to 2 hours walk but steep till the border camp at Chiwabhanjang. Keeping this as camp we walk on further for acclimatization to the point called Singalila and return to camp. Overnight Tent. (B,L,D)

We begin with a steep climb but on a well-defined and ancient path through rhododendron forests to a clearing where there are some prayer flags. We then descend to a point at 10,824 ft, with the path switching between Nepal and Sikkim and offering spectacular views on side of the ridge. The trail here literally clings to the ridge top with no way on either side. The dense rhododendron forest in spring is in full bloom adding color to this already wonderful walk. We stop for lunch before continuing to another ridge top and then to camp by a yak herders camp at Dhor. From camp we have splendid views across a succession of ridges as well as a beautiful sunset panorama of the high peaks of Nepal, including Makalu and Everest. Overnight Tent. (B,L,D,)

We get up early to go to the viewpoint to watch the sunrise on Kanchenjunga - the world’s third highest mountain. Most of the day is ascents and descents till we reach some pray flags. We continue staying high between 11,800 ft and 12,700ft till camp at Paharay Megu. Overnight Tent. (B,L,D)

The terrain becomes more open and the views of the Mountains get larger. We follow a wide valley passing a large waterfall to the holy lakes at Paharay Jamle (13,776 ft) some of which are very important pilgrim sites to the Sikkimese who come here during the monsoon months. Today is a relatively long day but one of the best walks again as you cross two high passes Danphe Bir at 14760ft, being the higher one. Both passes offer stunning view of the Kanchenjunga, Kabru and Pandim. We leave camp early in order to get to the pass before the clouds set in. The trail is relatively easy as you go around two holy lakes surrounded by many prayer flags and stones. The pass can be seen from a distance as we zigzag our way up to the pass. We then descend and then go up again to Danphe Bir and marked by hundreds of pray flags. The view again is as spectacular as ever. We then descend through open grounds and then through pine and juniper forests to Gomathang. Overnight Tent. (B,L,D)

We contour the hillside on an up and down trail and cross a small river and then one final climb to a small pass at 14,136 ft and offering views looking back to the mountains. We then continue to Pangding and camp there. Overnight Tent. (B,L,D,)

Today is a relatively easy walk to Dzongri. We cross the river and then climb gradually to the pass and then descend through the vast grazing grounds of Dzongri. From here we get excellent views of Rathong and other mountains besides Kanchenjunga. A relatively easy walk of about 5 hours. Dzongri again is a huge grazing ground for yaks here we join with the main trail of Goecha La and will begin seeing more trekkers. We arrive Dzongri for lunch. Overnight Tent. (B,L,D)

Dzongri Rest Day (13,221 ft)

We will rise at dawn (weather permitting) and hike to the "hill top" for sunrise upon the Kanchenjunga range and the Onglathang Valley. Return to camp for breakfast then walk to Thangsing. We will see beautiful views of Kabru, Sinolchu, Simvu, Pandim and Goecha Peaks along the trek. A steep downhill will bring us to our lunch site, which will be by the river. After lunch it's a gradual uphill along the Onglathang valley, through meadows and gorges to camp in Thangsing. Overnight Tent. (B,L,D)

We begin our approach towards our last camp at Lamuney. Today‘s walk is a gradual uphill hike of about 2½ hours hike through the Onglathang valley. Lunch at camp and you will have the afternoon to do some optional day hikes to either the Samiti Lake (14,400 ft.) or to the base of Mt. Tenchen khang’s glacier (15,500 ft). Overnight Tent. (B,L,D)

We will rise very early for the long day hike to our final destination, Goche La. The trek to Goche La view point and back to Lamuney is about 4 hours. The view point provides great views of Kanchenjunga and surrounding peaks. Upon returning to the camp, we will continue to Thangsing, which is downhill all the way. Overnight Tent. (B,L,D)

We leave the Onglathang Valley behind us as we descend down to Kokchurong, about 1 hour from Thangsing and trek to Bakkim. This route is off the beaten path and goes along the edge of the hill for about 3 hours. We join the trail at Phedang where we will have lunch. Then we walk about 2 hours to the village of Tshoka then continue for another hour to our camp at Bakkim. Overnight Tent. (B,L,D)

It's an easy day of trek, we reach Yoksum by early afternoon. The rest of the afternoon is free to explore the town of Yoksum. This will be our last evening with the trekking staff. Overnight Hotel. (B,L,D)

After breakfast, we say our "good-byes" to the trekking staff and board our vehicles and drive to Darjeeling. We continue our journey along the Rangeet and Teesta rivers as we ascend to Darjeeling, arriving by late afternoon. Upon arrival, a hot shower awaits us, as we change into fresh clothes and get ready for our last dinner. Overnight Hotel. (B,L,D)
